The 1979 International Harvester Tractor and Scout Deal

The International Harvester Scout holds a special place in automotive history as one of the first true American SUVs, designed for both rugged off-road capability and everyday driving. Introduced in 1961, the Scout quickly became an icon for its durability and versatility, particularly favored by outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers. In 1979, International Harvester sweetened the deal for customers by offering a promotion that bundled their renowned tractors with the purchase of a Scout. If you bought an International tractor, you'd receive a free Scout, showcasing the brand's confidence in their vehicles' ability to handle both farm and off-road terrain.

Reimagined for Today, Inspired by Yesterday

In the 1960s, the original International Harvester Scout became a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts for its rugged durability. Now, after two years in development, the new generation Scout SUVs and trucks are here to carry on that legacy with a modern twist. "The original core idea - rugged, versatile vehicles capable of off-road adventure and family duty - is more relevant than ever," said Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Scout Motors. The new Scout lineup includes two standout models: the Traveler SUV and the Terra pickup, both built on a custom body-on-frame chassis not shared with other VW vehicles. This fresh platform allows for a solid rear axle, independent front suspension, and over a foot of ground clearance-granting the new Scouts a maximum wading depth of 36 inches.

Electric Power, Enhanced for Adventure

The new Scouts are powered by dual electric motors delivering a hefty 1000 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0-60 mph acceleration in just 3.5 seconds. Complete with front and rear locking differentials, sway-bar disconnect, and a choice of 33-inch standard tires (or 35-inch with a bed-mounted spare for the Terra), the Scout lineup is set to rival the likes of the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Hummer EV in off-road capability. Plus, the new models offer versatile roof options, including a sleek glass option and the unique "Cabana Top" rolling cover.

Extended Range for True Off-Road Capability

For Scout fans who venture far from the beaten path, range is everything. Alongside the pure EV versions, Scout has introduced a range-extender model, dubbed "Harvester." With a small combustion engine serving as an onboard generator, the Harvester setup provides an impressive range of over 500 miles, ensuring Scout drivers can go the distance without compromise. The lineup will also include 800-volt architecture and North American Charging Standard (NACS) compatibility, supporting up to 350 kW charging for quick top-ups.

Practical Features and Towing Power

The Terra pickup model comes equipped with a 5.5-foot bed capable of towing up to 10,000 lbs and a 2,000-lb payload capacity - numbers that put it in line with the capabilities of many half-ton trucks. Both the Traveler and Terra also feature dual 120-volt outlets and a 240-volt outlet, ready to power job-site tools, tailgating setups, or camping essentials. Scout is also releasing its own line of lifestyle and off-road accessories, from bumpers and winches to lighting and auxiliary gear, making these EVs trail-ready right off the lot.

Reservations Now Open

Excited for a chance to own the next generation Scout? Reservations are officially open, with a $100 refundable deposit securing your spot in line. Scout anticipates a starting retail price around $60,000, or closer to $50,000 after applicable tax credits. Built proudly in South Carolina, production will begin in 2027 - a year later than initially planned but worth the wait to ensure true American craftsmanship.
